Diet For Thyroid Health

Don’t Fix Your Thyroid, Feed It!

Your thyroid is a complex gland that is quite particular about its needs and wants. It requires certain nutrients, in certain amounts, none of them too high or too low and of course, it is highly dependent on the health of your adrenal glands and ovaries. In spite of being relatively small, your thyroid flaunts a big attitude.

Thousands of blog posts, articles, webinars, podcasts and videos have been created to both educate the public and provide a “one-size-fits-all” approach to addressing your finicky thyroid. But it isn’t quite that simple. Every one of you is unique. And that means your thyroid will be unique in what it needs and wants. But trying to determine what, when, why and how to fix it can be daunting, even for your nutritional coach or healthcare advisor.

So instead of trying to fix everything at once, let’s start by building a strong foundation. Every structure in the body requires a certain number of nutrients that keep it running smoothly. And these nutrients, when sufficient, form the foundation that keeps everything stable. But without the right nutrients, the house starts to fall apart, just like your thyroid. Until the necessary repairs have been made, i.e. nutrients have been provided, the house will continue to be unstable. You will forever be fixing the problem rather than addressing the cause.

From the Bottom Up:
Without boring you with all the details and mathematic calculations required for establishing a strong foundation, let’s just cut to the chase and make it simple. Here are the seven foods you need to get in your diet every day (or almost) to start rebuilding your thyroid foundation.

  • Organic brazil nuts – 2-3 per day
  • Cod Liver oil – 3,000-4,000 mg/day
  • Sesame seeds or Tahini
  • Grass fed beef – 2-3x/week
  • Organic/pastured eggs – 4-5x/week
  • Plenty of dark leafy greens
  • Seaweed or scallops

These foods will start providing a broad range of nutrients your thyroid can use to enhance and stabilize its foundation. Once these nutrients are plentiful in your body, more specific thyroid support can be considered such as iodine, trace minerals, liver, and overall digestive support. Start at the bottom and work your way up! This will ensure your thyroid will continue to support you for years to come!
